Trash neighbors put out

Since I don't get in nearly as much walking working from home as I did pre-COVID I usually walk during lunch and I've noticed my neighbors tend to throw out some pretty decent stuff. Just the other trash day I saw a three burner gas grill, a charcoal grill (neither exterior showed any signs of rust), a set of 4 kitchen chairs with no visible damage, a bookshelf and an interior door all at different houses. And I know from conversations that some of my neighbors replace things just because they want new things as opposed to it broke or no longer provided all the desired functions - and even then I suspect some breaks could be fixed with minimal effort. So to see this going to the dump as waste is a bit of a bummer, both because these would have been great to have earlier in my life and from the waste generation perspective.

Same here. I'll see my neighbors completely move everything from their garage onto their driveway, then go in and clean. I never understood why they constantly throw away such nice tools and stuff, but it's all free so I can't complain.

In less well-to-do areas it's usually pretty easy to find a new home for them with a "free" sign, but maybe your neighbors assume nobody would want this "garbage" anymore.
It usually doesn't take much effort to give something like that away on craigslist/Facebook versus letting it take up landfill space, but lots of people don't care :(

My neighbors and such do this all the time. We have a neighborhood facebook group and I don't think a single day goes by that folks don't make a post that they put stuff on their doorstep for anyone to take.

It's natural for a lot of things - kids grow up, toys no longer get played with, etc.. etc..

But yeah, people are dumb with money. News at 11.

But this is also why when it comes to things like buying furniture - I would rather buy a nice amish piece than a factory made piece of crap like Ikea and other furniture outlets that will fall apart in 5 years.

Yeah it's always been my experience that shit goes quickly when you offer it for free. In my old neighborhood there were also some enterprising individuals with trucks who would come around on trash day to snag the nicer stuff. I don't see that here either for some reason

Its weird. Place it on your curb with "free" and it disappears. Put it online and it tends to be a complete shit-show with flaky people. We have a bunch of trash pickers around here. Anything worth saving I try to keep out of the can so someone can rescue it.

Yep I find it's easier to just place stuff at the curb than to try to sell or even give away online. Unfortunately the city passed a bylaw against that recently along with a good 20 or so other bylaws related to garbage. Basically it's not really illegal for you to place it at the curb as long as it's not garbage day (that would be breaking another bylaw about using proper container) but it's illegal for someone else to take it. Basically they say anything at the curb is property of the city so no one is allowed to take it and technically you're not even allowed to take it back yourself once you put it there. I guess one work around would be to put it closer to your house and then put the sign that it's free. I forget how many feet the city owns, you'd want to make sure it's further back than that.

Just don't put the "free" sign too close to the house or you may end up with squatters :p
