There seems to be a common believe that athlon64's prefer a TRAS of 10. I'm wondering if there's any validity to this and if so where's the evidence?

It may depend on the memory, but in AnandTech's latest memory review of OCZ VX RAM... it seems to prefer 5-7.

I get best bandwith with a tras of 10 with my nforce3 board.
Run memtest86 and see what your board likes the most yourself.

If you have a thumbdrive or something that you're capable of booting from I don't see why you couldn't use that instead.

I don't think its the CPU or the memory, its the motherboard I believe. 9-11 is usually best for NF3, whereas 6-8 is best for NF4

Hmmm... my benchmark scores increased a bit when I went from 11 to 7 with my nForce3 board.

*EDIT* Actually I was mistaken, it does perform better at 10 or 11 with my nForce3.

Memtestx68+ has cd iso images ready for download I prefer memtestx86+ as it tells you your memory timings in the test and other additional data.
