As for the original, THAT is why I always tell my secretary where I am going and when I expect to return (if that day) and why I always have my mobile phone on me when (at least when I am not at home).

I love how the maintenance guys were working on every other elevator and never seemed to notice that elevator 30 was unavailable.

I use to represent elevator maintenance companies and I can guarantee you that somebody's head rolled because no one was there to answer the intercom. I had a case where someone was seriously injured because they got stuck, got no answer on the intercom and took matters into their own hands.
