Transporting video from camcorder to computer

If i have a video recording on my camcorder, how do i transport it to my comp and make it into an mpeg?

What kind of camcorder do you have? My MiniDV camcorder has a firewire connection that I hook up to my WinXP machine. Then I just use Windows Movie Maker to record it into a mpg file.

If you don't have a MiniDV camcorder, I would think you'd need a video card with video in and record off of that.

firewire to firewire (as mentioned, with a firewire card, ATI 8500DV, or SB Audigy)
analog to firewire example
analog to analog using video in RCA jacks on video card like the older ATI all in wonder.

Many digital 8 cameras have firewires too.

Analog camcorder will need to be digitized by a capture card.
