Transporting My Entire System (without using a car): Suggestions?

Ok. I'm moving a couple hundred miles, and I'll be going via airplane. I have a big 19" monitor, my midtower PC, speakers, a keyboard, and a printer. Those are the big boys anyway.

I want to take as many things on the plane with me as possible. I've found a hardshell SKB pull case that has the exact dimensions of my midtower. I guess I have no choice but to use UPS or FedEx for my monitor, because its just so big. I really don't know what to do about the printer, but I'm guessing I should UPS that too. I hope to fit the keyboard and speakers (a 5.1 system) in my regular luggage.

Any tips from those with experience?

Do you know the number of that hardshell pull case that you got for your computer? I am going to do the same thing in a few months for college so that would be a cool thing to get. Thanks.

Spend the xtra $'s and use FedEx to ship your monitor, UPS is guaranteed to destroy it.

Have you considered a one-way car or small truck rental? Would be much cheaper than flying such a short distance, plus you'd save the shipping costs for your monitor, etc. But the biggest advantage is that all your gear would be much safer.

I have to agree with Midnight, Rent a small uhaul if you have to. Cheaper then shipping the monitor, and no plane ticket needed eather. And you KNOW it will be safe. If you are moving, how is the rest of your stuff getting there?

If you ship the monitor, make sure you insure it for what it will cost to replace it. The extra cost would be minimal compared to what it will cost to get it replaced if they break it.

If you're trusting the baggage handlers with your PC, I'd take if you haven't seen the video that came out around christmas with the workers tossing stuff into a plane, dropping stuff left and right. At the very least, I'd pull the hard drives out of it and pack them in your carry-on.

Oh, I'm going to college, not really "moving" per se. I'm planning to order the SKB case from Buy-Cases.com. Item # SKB-2218PR/FF. Its under the Pull-Handle category, the dimensions are 22x18x8. SKB cases are very well padded and have strong covers, I won't worry about those handlers (knock on wood)...

A car is completely out of the question. My father refuses to drive down to Atlanta (GA Tech), and we live in NJ. Since I'm a freshman I'm not allowed to bring a car.

If you ship stuff, make sure you fed-ex, UPS will kill anything you have and make sure you get insurance on the stuff. Also, try looking at other transportation like a train that would be easier to carry more stuff on. They should have a train that goes from NJ to GA, i took one from MD to FL and carried a lot fo crap on with me.

Have you considered renting a van or at least a car? Most car/van rental places offer one way rentals.

even with the pads the baggage handlers will fsck up your computer. i'd fedex that too.

Taking the computer in the case is probably fine in the hard case, but you should take out any hard drives and carry those with you. Also, if the CPU is a slot type then you might want to take that out too, especially if you don't have cpu and heatsink supports mounted.

<< Also, if the CPU is a slot type then you might want to take that out too, especially if you don't have cpu and heatsink supports mounted. >>

exactly what i was about to say.

Have you considered hitch hiking? Its a good way to meet people and make friends. Besides I think you are spending too much money flying all that way and shipping things. Sell everything except a backup tape of your drive, hitchhike to Atlanta, and if the hike hasn't opened your mind and free'd your spirit causeing you to blow off school and move to India, you can buy everything new with the money you've saved and restore from the tape. Are you really sure you want to go to college? Maybe you should just stay with your parents and live in the basement. then you could get odd jobs, selling fast food and spend all your time watching porn while playing Black and white. Ya, thats it... I think you should just not go to college... problem solved...

UPS fscked up my sony g400. Now I have to get them to come over and replace it (read: big hassle). Ship monitor fedex, ship everything else ground. Oh, I hope you have the original packing 😉 If you don't, I packed my computer in my down comforter and bubble wrap and put it in a box, shipped ups, works fine.
