We were about to go purchase a 50" plasma and just before stepping out the door I think how we are going to transport it. Did a few searches, read a few articles and threads and got tons of conflicting info.

Does it HAVE to be transported upright even when in it's original packaging?

Afaik.... yes. I used to sell them when they first came out and that was how it was back then. Since then... well maybe it changed.

Most of the threads/articles I've been reading are 2-8 years old. Couple that with conflicting info, we should probably just play it safe and get them to deliver it.

It HAS to be transported upright. Transporting it flat increases the risk of cracking the glass due to the weight being transferred to the weakest point which is the center of the glass. Why do you think you see trucks transporting car windshields upright?

I transported mine flat on the bed of my truck, but the trip was only about 10 miles, too. It has been 5 years and no problems.

Because of the shape of the box, it was wanting to fall over in the bed when upright, so I would take the chance of the plasma flat versus falling over in the back of the truck.

I've always transported mine upright in the back of an SUV wrapped in blankets with me holding it like a baby.
