Transparent windows in Linux

Currently running standard Kubuntu 6.06 (tried upgrading to Edgy but there were a few problems, might be solvable now but I'd like to image my hard drive so I don't end up wasting so much time if it doesn't work), KDE 3.5.3 (upgraded with Automatix2), and was looking at trying to get transparent windows to snazz up my desktop. Probably not fully transparent, as that might take way more power than I have (ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 on Core Centrino Duo T2300, I believe), but at least pseudo-transparent, with an opacity of 50-70%.

How might I go about this? Is it possible with standard KDE, or do I need to install another window manager?

Thanks for your help.

Hmm... I don't think that worked. It looks the same, except I have no more top bar on my windows.

Edit: Oh well, I guess here comes another reinstall.

Edit: Or, rather, how do I get rid of Beryl? Simply switching back to KWM and quitting Beryl seems to work, for now.
