Transmission problems - 2001 Honda Accord. - trade-in or repair?

I have been having some engine problems the past week or so, and finally took my car into the mechanic yesterday. I was told the transmission was blown ($3,000) and that there's also a problem with the co2 emissions detector? ($300).

Should I just go ahead and trade-in the car? The car has 86k miles on it. I've heard that this transmission issue is not something new with Accords, and may be covered under some sort of voluntary recall, though, the honda dealer I called refutes this. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I think he has the V4.

i wont yell at you or anything 😉

but anyways: hondas have had transmission issues for quite some time. take it to a diff. dealer who doesnt know the issue, and trade it in on a newer vehicle, or a CPO'd vehicle. or if you dont want a honda, and want a toyo, or other, go there. i would highly reccomend the Sonata right now.

Was the $3k transmission quoted by the dealer? Never take a car to the dealer unless it's under warranty.

Yes, it's driveable. What a good price on an accord or camry for trade-in?

edmunds.com
kbb.com
blackbook.com

take the lowest you get of all of those, and make sure they arent on the "Excellent ratings" and more like poor.

take that as about what they will offer you, and you have about what to expect.

So much for Honda being reliable. Pfft.

Wow, how does this mean they are not? So lame.

A lot of my friends drive Hondas and love them. They would not buy another brand. My next car will be a Honda Accord V-6. Either that or the TSX, but probably the Accord. High resale value, great reliability and the typical greatness of the Accord is leading me towards it.

its a WELL known, and WELL established issue with honda's older auto trans.

Might be with some of the models, but look at reliability scores. Your domestics typically do much worse in every category. I'd rather get a Hyundai Sonata than a Taurus, any day.

2001 is old?

2001 Accords sell for $10,000 or more. My buddy paid $11,000 for his 2001 Accord EX V-6. I've seen some much higher than that. Your mileage is low in Honda terms.

Honda fan aint ya. I'm amused how much of a soft spot some people have towards Japanese cars.
I'm wondering why did Honda release that crappy tranny in their cars for so many years.
I believe the Odyssey, TL, Accords were affected.

Should I stick with Hondas or go with Toyota?

Just did a minor look up of reliability of the 2001 Honda Accord over a long period of time. It got excellent scores. Toyotas lack personality and are boring to drive compared to Hondas in my opinion. Reliability will be similar. Also, the older Accords are better than the Camrys in more ways than one. The interior is just much better.

A dependable Civic from 98-2002 or so is nicely priced and are relatively zippy.
