I did a flush on a vehicle with over 100k miles with no issue. It's not a death sentence, but I can see how one might run into trouble.
A repeated drain/fill has the advantage that as the ATF loosens up crud that crud will get drained out before it circulates for too long. To do it again, that's the route I would go. Make sure you get everything up to temperature and well-circulated before draining, I'd guess 15-20 minutes on the interstate would do it.
