Transmission Bell Housing Bracket/Cover

Anyone know what it is or have a pic of one? I can't seem to find a pic online. Mine broke because I ran over a huge rock. The mechanic just told me to go to the junk yard and get the right piece that covers the transmission housing so a rock won't go in and damage the entire transmission system. I have a hard time explaining this to junk yard guys and they're trying to sell me a whole transmission! I just need the bracket on the right side.

belt housing? no such thing. i think you mean transmission BELL housing. even then, the bell housing is part of the whole transmission case and if you broke that you cant buy a piece to fix it. i think you mean a cover on the bottom of the bell housing.

i dont know where you got bracket or anything.. i honestly have no idea. call the guy back and make sure of what he said

Ah.. looks like i'm out of luck as other techs are telling me the same thing. I'm gonna try to contact my insurance and see if they will cover this.

I seriously doubt they will cover that, thats like asking them to fix your headlight because a rock hit it. Listen to the mechanic and go to the junk yard.

I did go to a bunch of junkyards today and they all told me the same thing... that it I'll have to buy the complete transmission because it's all one part.

Why wouldn't insurance fix your headlight if a rock hit it and you have full coverage and you're willing to pay the deductible? (Assuming the deductible is less than the full cost of fixing it)

If you try to purchase a remanufactured transmission, you're not going to get your core charge back in this case as the housing is damaged.

Worse case, you are out $1545 (including core charge and shipping) for a remanufactured unit from these guys. Figure in another $600-$800 for removal and installation of the new unit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...0794540QQtcZphoto#core

The insurance company isn't going to get you a remanufactured transmission, they are going to get you a transmission that has similar miles. Consider how failure prone the 98-02 transmissions are, there's a good chance that the transmission will fail on you a month later. Now, you are back to square one, and not only that, you have an insurance claim against you.

Isn't the "bell housing" on transverse fwd cars just a cover, though?

The bell housing is the part that bolts to the engine block. It's the transmission's housing itself.

I know what a traditional bell housing is, thanks.

That's why I put it in quotes.

Almost sounds like he's talking about the cover that you used to find over the torque converter and flywheel on an auto tranny.
