Transition from college to working 40 hours

Did anyone else have a problem going from college to working 40 hours a week? I got a nice paying job 6 months ago and it's exactly what I want to do, but I find myself hating it more and more.

I work for a corporate department that does a lot of travel. At the start, they said it was going to be 25% but so far it's about 40%. I had to give my cat to my parents because I was gone literally every other week. My $700 apartment sits empty for half a month. I end up traveling on weekends, so it's like I don't even get a break from work :( My apartment looks so messy right now because whenever I'm home, I literally crash on the bed or the couch and that's it.

I got a job straight out of college with less than a week of break between graduation and starting, so it didn't help with the problem :(

What can I do to reduce the stress?
I could move to one of the plants and get the same job title, but it'd get rid of the corporate pay and it'd get rid of the notoriety of working at corporate too :(
I could drink more but drinking alone is bad.

Uh, 40 hours a week is nothing. Its called life. Deal with it. You'll be working the next 30-40 years, probably more hours in the future.

I'd find a cheaper apartment if thats all the time you spend there. Is the extra pay worth the stress. You should be very thankful you found a job that fast right out of school.

That kind of sucks man. I would hate travelling a lot.

However I am still looking forward to graduating myself and working 40 hrs per week, school just blows. As long as I don't have to travel ;)

I think the travelling is the big problem here though, I wouldn't want to travel that much, unless it was temporary.

It's never 40 hours when travel is involved, and of course, salary isn't compensated for any OT. I spent 17 hours on saturday just flying home from a plant visit.

I'm worried quite a bit about adjusting to working life too. Kinda the opposite thing though. I'm so busy in college for the most part I don't know what I'm going to do once I'm only working 8-6 or whatever.

Yeah I'm in the same boat ... I was interning for a company just this past summer and I graduated (this summer too) then continued on as full time with no breaks. What I suggest is (if you have paid time off) is to take some extra time off during the x-mas break. That'll give you some time to catch up on anything you have on your to do list.

Try leaving the country for 8-12 months at a time. Try going to work at 5am on saturdays and sundays.

40 hours of work .. does not account for commute and heading to the airport for business trips.

We get it already. Being in the military is hard work. You don't have to thread crap every job thread when someone has a rant or complaint about their job.

Yes I do. People certainly whine where I work, and its annoying. Stop acting like a little kid, and start being an adult. My mom still to this day works more hours then me, and I've never heard her complain her whole life.

I graduated in May and took a job. The transition has been fairly easy for me, though I don't have to travel and the commute is very easy.

Also I was working 70-80 hours a week in college, so 40 hours/week is relatively stress-free :D

yup, I'm working over 50 a week and its seems that I do almost nothing else. I'm losing weight like crazy too and I wasn't even overweight to begin with. I come home and just crash, then its time for work again. The weekend comes and I spend a good portion of it resting and trying to recover then I have to go out and buy food for the week ahead, do my laundry, try to tidy up then its off to bed to start the new week. It can definetly be a shock but I knew it was coming seeing my dad leave at 4:30 and get home at 7 every night while I was growing up.

edit: drsafety I assume you are couting studying for school and going to class in your 80 hour estimate. Honestly I don't think going to school and going to a job are one in the same, but thats my opinion. If you were working 80 hours and going to school on top of that well then..... are there even that many hours in a week?

Exactly. To anyone who had hard working parents, this cycle is no suprise. Now throw a wife into the mix who is also working random ass hours, and perhaps a kid, and you can see why your parents were always stressed out.

I hated my job so much (audit) I quit after a year and joined a semi-internet startup and started an online retail business with my girlfriend.

Perhaps some people aren't satisfied with that lifestyle I guess....

For everybody Life does not =work...or at least they would like it to not be that way.

I'm not attacking I'm just saying...... :)

LOL. Welcome to the real fvcking world.

Try thinking about the people who don't have nice jobs, who work 60+ hours a week, just to almost pay the bills.

successful how? they make a bunch of money and have no time to enjoy it except for three weeks out of the year when they go on vacation. I don't call that success.
