transient bug with the unix command 'wc'?

or am i just losing my goddamn mind... i have a file that counted 388760 lines yesterday, and i spent 2 hours trying to figure out why it was missing 30 lines (should have been 388790) before giving up and going home. now i come in and it shows up as 388790. WTF IS GOING ON?? same machine... same file...
