The recent copy of Game Informer magazine included a bit of unexpected news. A new game set in the Transformers Universe is currently in development by Activision and High Moon Studios. The game wiill be released sometime in 2010 for the PC, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360.

This version of Transformers will not be based on the Michael Bay movie versions or the original 80s Transformers cartoon. Instead, it will be loosely based on the Transformers War Within comic book series. The designs of the Autobots and Decepticons will look completely new but do pay more of a homage to the original designs than the recent movie versions.

Gameplay promises to be a third-person shooter that features campaigns for both the Autobot and Decepitcon side. Transforming is supposed to play a big role and you won't be limited to ground based transformations. You'll even have the option to pick which Transformer you want to control on mission. Multiplayer is promised but no details about what this entails has been given yet.

80's cartoon Transformers or bust! Also, 80's cartoon voices or no thanks! I mean seriously...the Megatron and Starscream voices were terrible in the new movies.

As a random aside: so was the new Cobra Commander!

The movies were terrible period.

Who knows where this game will end up. Battling robots? Could work but it hasn't in the past.

Depends on how well the developer does with it. Their two previous games are Darkwatch (75 metacritic) and The Bourne Conspiracy (71 metacritic).

I do like the idea that it is not tied to any movie and is loosely based on one of the better Transformer comics.

Some of the voice actors from G1 could conceivably be used like Peter Cullen and Frank Welker. But others like the voices of Starscream and Jazz have passed.
 
The old PS2 Transformers game was pretty good. I don't know about this one but its good to know that its not based on those Michael Bay travesties.
