Transferring video to my Android phone

I was thinking about transferring some movies to my HTC Desire so I can watch them on a 5 hour train journey. Obviously I can't use the full resolution Xvid files... What format and resolution would work best? Which preferably free application is best for transcoding?

Just leave it at the native DVD res 720x480 and encode around 1gb total size.
