Hey all,

Couple of questions

What are the laws regarding the copying of music off Records & Tapes into a digital state on the computer?

What kind of software will I need to be able to do this?

Thanks

This is legal assuming the conversion is for personal use. Not sure what kind of sound card you have, but I transferred a ton of 45s using the Smart Recorder software that came with my X-Fi platinum. It's easy to use and does a good job reducing hiss and clicks/pops while still maintaining the character of the original recording. It's hard to do batch recordings with Smart Recorder though, so maybe someone can recommend a better tool for that. It wasnt a big deal for me since the records i was converting were 2 tracks per side, but it could get annoying manually starting and stopping the recording for each track on a full length album.

I rigged up my turntable through a preamp and stuck it into my microphone port on my old sound blaster live on my junk PC using audacity to record / chop it up into tracks. Be sure to ground the turn table or it will be full of static.

I just use Nero Wave Editor. Of course this means manually seperating the files by individual tracks after recording a whole LP side, but it's worth it to me to preserve irreplaceable recordings.

It also has nice features for filtering, editing volume and so forth considering that it's just something I got as an oem software. In the case of bad scratches and stuff, I've also become good at manually editing those out. It takes some time, but I find it rewarding to do a good job restoring a damaged track.
