Transferring large files from one machine to another

Hey all,

I'm noticing when I'm transferring large files from one machine to another the rate of transfer plummets to about 1.22MB/sec and smaller files would be around 20-30MB/sec. I checked the ATA/IDE settings and all have set to DMA when available (and they all show up as either DMA or Ultra DMA 2). Any ideas? Neither machine was downloading anything else and they are all connected via a switch (all are full-100 duplex). Here are the specs of the two machines:

Machine A
Vista Home Premium 64-bit
WD 6400AAKS HD - SATA

Machine B
Windows XP 32-bit
WD WD800JB HD - IDE

Let me know if you need me to include any other info.

for the vista machine, is it running service pack 1? one of the fixes in it is a change in the file transfers over a network. one of the common complaints was about slow transfers

Connect the two machines via a crossover cable if you have one. If the speeds increase then it's your switch or network bandwidth. If it's still slow then you have either a cable issue (the crossover) or something on one of the machines is causing the slowdown.

How on earth can you get 30MBps on a 100Mbps connection? Fast-Ethernet will probably get around 8-9MBps. You could get a Gigabit switch that'll probably sustain a 30MBps data rate.

Yeah, it's impossible to be getting 30MB/s with a 100mbps network connection. You sure you didn't mean 20-30mbps?

Whoops. That.

Either way when looking at the transfer it maintains a consistent speed with smaller files yet anything large ( a couple of hundred megs) and I can see the transfer rate plummet exponentially.

that makes no sense. when copying small files you have more of overhead -each file is new transfer and file needs to be created on new machine. when sending large file, network can be utilized to its highest efficiency.
