This may not be the best place for this topic but it doesn't really fit into any other forums, so here it goes.

Good friend of mine moved a few hundred files away but we've been working on a project for a while and still need to share files back and forth, some pretty large (video clips for editing, etc).

Anyway, what is the best way to share them? I was thinking creating my own torrent file and having him download it from me and vice versa so we could just maximize transfer speeds to each other (both having very high connections.)

Don't want to use file sharing sites. Potentially create my own FTP on my home computer? Is that possible?

Halp!

You could use an archiving program to split it into smaller compressed files and either email them or send them over an IM program separately.

Yeah, you need to just set up an FTP server on your PC. I think Serv-U is still free. If not, Filezilla Server is. Don't forget to forward your ports.

If it were me, I'd use FTP - but sometimes that requires teaching the n00b on the other end how to use an FTP client. Maybe Dropbox would be easiest.

email is a horrible idea. IM is really tedious.

just set up an FTP. it's the "File Transfer" protocol after all.

though BT isn't a bad idea b/c it gives you CRC checking for free.

If a user can't figure out how to use an FTP client, they have no business using a PC :D :D

Google Drive works well for this too. You get 5GB for free, or 25GB for a couple of bucks. That's what we use at our office and it kicks ass.

I use google docs (now named drive). Very easy to use and you can choose who can see it / modify / dl / etc.
