Transferring Data

What's the best way to transfer data from an old HD to a new Computer/HD? What kind of cable/adapter would I need to buy and about how much is it? Or, would it be possible to just connect both computers on the internet and sending it as a file?

Excuse me if my answer is not what you would be expecting, but if i were you, i would simply connect the old hd to a different ide/sata bus with its own cable and just would copy files from one to another. Perhaps your question was a bit deeper than that, but thats what it seems to me to be the simplest and fastest way to do what you intend.
