Hi all,
I have not used the cross-over cable method of transferring data from an old pc to a new one but I am now faced with doing this on one of our work pcs.
What exactly do I buy and where do I put it? :)
Also will the old pc appear as another drive on the new one?

First, make sure both PCs have Network cards in them. Then you'll have to configure the cards with a protocol...in your case, I'd use NetBEUI and have the Client for Microsoft Networks installed as well. Then you'll need to get a crossover cable which is not the same as a patch cable... Once you get all that done, you can plug the crossover directly into each computer's network card and you will have to enable file and print sharing on the old computer... Then you can begin to transfer files by searching the network neighborhood for your old computer and finding the shared folder or drive. Good luck and if you have any questions, just ask and someone will chime in to help! :)

your better off just conncting both hard drives to one computer and transfering the data or the partition because using the lan will be slow as he11

Yeah, just use norton ghost or some ghosting program and copy directly over, since that's what it seems you want to do...

If you want to make an exact image of your existing hard drive, then you're going to have to ghost them, not just copy over via the network...
