transferring data between Laptops...

I have two laptops (VAIO's) and a network cable that came with it. How do I use the cable to transfer data between them. Is there a special software required or should it be installed on the comps already. Please Help...

The cable that was send with each single computer it is probably Straight Cat5.

To connect two computers without a Hub/Switch, you will need to buy CrossOver Cat5.

To connect the two you need to configure the computer for network connection (this is part of the OS).

Check Control Panel, Network, and see if the network is already configured.

aloha kakou!

I once saw a xircom nic that had a setup option to choose between "normal" and "crossover". I'm not sure what exactly that option did (didn't have a chance to play with it) but it'd be cool if you could use a regular cat5 cable as a crossover one.

edit: just thought of something...maybe you could transfer data using the IR ports on your laptops.
