i just did the same about 2 months ago, although it was in win98, winxp should be the same. First make sure all your important files are backed up (like on a cdr). Did your new drive come with install software? mine was a maxtor, which came with step by step. You will need to set your old drive as the slave on the cable and with its jumper settings and your new drive as the master. If you don't have the right jumper settings for your old drive try getting them from the manufacturer's web site. I got mine off of western digitals page, they had great illustrations which made it simple. Hope this helps....

About the best way to do it is to set it up as the master on the secondary chanell and then use some hard drive formatting software such as "Maxblast" that comes with a new hard drive or can be downloaded from their website for free. this will give you the option to copy all your data onto the new hard drive. (http://www.maxtor.com/Maxtorhome.htm)

Or if you are fortunate enough to have a raid set-up, then you can use it to mirror the data from one drive onto the other.

Good luck

Get hold of Powerquest's Drive Copy . . . it makes that procedure very simple and easy to do. Just create the bootable diskette with the program, and have you new drive installed as a slave to the old one. But and copy drive 1 to drive 2 . . . and in the "Advanced" menu, uncheck HIDE SOURCE drive. The job should take only about 20 minutes.

Get it illegally. Everyone here knows that pirated software is ok and the manufacturers already make too much money. Most of the people on these forums use nothing but stolen operating systems and software. Hell, that's what makes all the folks here such a tight community, they're all thieves!

Norton Ghost is also a good program for imaging hard drives and you can download a trial copy from their website. It's fully functional for what you are doing.
