Yea so while I'm having a pretty good time at college, I've come to the conclusion this is really not where I want to be.

As a reach transfer I was looking at Cornell.

I can almost definitely get accepted as a transfer to UIUC (was accepted there for freshman admission so transferring shouldn't be a problem).

What other schools should I look at as an undergrad? In the same ballpark as UIUC and UMCP of course. I know I can't get into Stanford, MIT, etc. I'd like to stay closer to the East cost, going about as far as UIUC.

Why I want to transfer:
I basically don't like the atmosphere of UMCP. I'm not a fan of the people I've met so far (have several close friends I met here), but nobody seems very outgoing or willing to just relax. It seems as everyone is on the defensive that I've met. Although, the teachers are great and I'm having fun in the classes. UMCP was originally my top safety school, so maybe psychologically I just feel like a loser being here. I don't know. All I know is that I think I may be happier at a different school.

There are plenty of other good schools in that area and ease of entrance range (especially if you're talking about Cornell, which is the best CS school of the Ivy League), but even ignoring them, there are plenty of good university CS departments such as the ones at the University of MIchigan, Purdue, University of WIsconsin: Madison, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, Johns Hopkins, etc. The question is why you want to transfer.

man I rememeber reading about UNC Chapel Hill the other day. USNews listed their average freshman acceptance GPA as 4.14 or something. Crazy...

I have absolutely nothing to offer this thread, unless you like asians... then in that case transfer to UC Irvine :D

UMCP is a huge school with a huge number of people. Nobody seems outgoing or willing to relax? Maybe its you, or you're hanging out with the wrong people

Not saying it isn't. Very well could be me. Maybe it's because I'm in the Gemstone dorm. I seem to have a lot more fun with my friends over at Easton.

what year are you?

also, if you are not happy, you should be really sure what about the atmosphere you dislike, and really sure that the places you apply to have an atmosphere that you would like. doesn't sound like you are really paying attention to that, which is surprising since it is the reason you are transferring the first place.

Freshman.

Well that's why I was trying to get suggestions for schools so I could look into them now, considering colleges start taking applications right after break.

I'd like not to go to UIUC because the atmosphere there isn't that much better if not worse.

I know an comp. engineering major at Cornell who says that it's a lot of work, but he enjoys it alot. Same thing for my friend who I think is a type of education major there, she's enjoying herself.

UIUC has a pretty terrible social scene. So does my alma mater, Carnegie Mellon, for that matter. you might just want to stay and try approaching more new people and introducing yourself differently.
