Transfering stuff to new account.

I have figured out a way to fix the "media Center has stopped working" problem. you just have to create a new account. I want to move all of the things on the old, slightly disfuntional account to the new account and then delete the old one, but i dont know how. it also appears that Steam (the valve app) is not even on my new account. i would want to move that over to. Along with steam, microsoft office wants to reinstall and i want to have all of my emails and outlook settings back. Thanks
P.S. if anybody has figured out another way to get media center to work again please let me know.

If you're on WinXP, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and give that a try.

I should have mentioned in my firs post that i have Vista. I went to the transfer wizard but it only had options for transfering stuff to a whole new computer. i just want to transfer stuff to another account. I would think there MUST be a way to do it. Thanks anyway though.

I see. I just did a test with Vista's transfer wizard, and I think it'll do most of what you want, even though you're not actually migrating to a new computer.

1) create your new user account. For the moment, make it an Administrator account. Also switch your old user account to an Administrator account. This step allows both accounts to use Easy Transfer.

2) log into your new account, then log out again (not sure if this is truly necessary or not).

3) log into your old account and run the Easy Transfer dealiebob. Use Advanced mode and deselect everything but your "old" user account itself, and tell it you're going to use a network or other location.

4) save the .MIG file someplace on one of your hard drives or wherever.

5) log onto your new account and run Easy Transfer. Aim it at the .MIG file that you saved, let it do its thing, then reboot.

6) after you're done, consider changing your new user account to a Standard user account for additional day-to-day security.

On my system, it managed to get stuff mostly right, including Outlook 2007 setup/emails, the Windows Theme, and browser settings. And most importantly 😀 I clicked Start > Games > Half Life 2: Episode 1 and all my savegames and control mapping are intact.

Hope that helps 🙂

Thanks, everything seems to have worked except that when i try to open outlook, it tells me i am not authorized. It also appears that steam, along with variouse other games like FEAR combat are missing. Can you tell me where to find them? I actually looked a bit closer and i am missing 8 games, including the steam games, from the game launcher thing.I think i know where steam i, it wouls be in the C:\Users\"old acount name"\appdata\etc,etc. but when i try to open "old account" it tells me that i dont have access and that i must change security but when i click continue it doesnt sem to work. Thanks

Steam.exe should be in C:\Program Files\Valve\Steam on 32-bit Vista, or C:\Program Files (x86)\Valve\Steam on 64-bit Vista. Try going to Add/Remove Programs, find Outlook 2007 or Office 2007 depending which you've got, and do a Repair. Any good?

I found steam in the program files but it wasnt in a valve folder. I tried launching steam with the Steam.exe thing but when it said connecting to specWB's account, it stopped responding. I went to my games folder again and for some reason now Half-Life: Deathmatch Source is there but none of the other ones. same thing when i tried to launch steam by double clicking that. Once when i tried to launch steam, the progress bar that said updating steam platform appeard but, it said something like "ERROR: Could not find mini(dont remember the rest of the file name) to begin dump".
As far as oulook goes, i had to insert the disk to try and repair it but it said it couldnt find a file. i am using Office 2003 BTW.
Here are some pictures related to both issues.

That's interesting. Easy thing first, try uninstalling Steam and reinstalling it. http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=getsteamnow&cc=US

For Outlook, check your permissions to the .PST folder it's griping about. To do so, you'll need to have Windows show hidden and system files/folders, since that location is both hidden and system. If you have a home-user variant of Vista, then you will need to boot into Safe Mode to view permissions (right-click the file, choose Properties, then choose the Security tab on the Properties panel).

In the Games folder, it might help to click Options at the top and make sure it's allowed to download info about your installed games. I'm not sure if that is mainly box art or what, but if reinstalling Steam doesn't get them relisted, you might want to check that.

Well, the issues are all but resolved. I decided to just delete the old account. I am currently in the process of reinstalling Steam and all the Valve games. They dont seem to be showing up in the games folder but i will probably never use it any way. As for outlook, it now opens. i had to add all my e-mail accounts again, fortunatly since getting oulook i hadnt even loged on to the others to delete emails from them so i was able to get every single email back. Any way, thanks for sticking with this thread till the end mechBgon. You h
