Transfering Laptop Data

Hello,
My friend is having problems with his laptop. He can't get it to boot, and the few times he has it shuts itself off within the first few minutes (overheating problem?). He needs the info off the hard drive. Is there a way to transfer the data off the laptop's hard drive to a desktop's hard drive via the IDE cable? Thanks!
 
Yes there is an adapter that will allow you to hook up the laptop hard drive to a desktop. I've done it before (it's been a while). In fact I still have the adapter, if can't find one I'll sell you mine for $10 via Paypal.
