i built the latest core 2 duo system a few months ago. installed windows on wd 74 raptor. recently added new wd 320g sata hd formatted for ntfs for storage.

my question is when i go to tranfer a 4 gig video folder from system hd to storage hd the time exceeds 3 hrs. is this normal or do i have storage hd setup wrong?

3 hrs is a lot but remember windows expoloer's estimates are pure bull ******.if nothing else try see if your processor usage increases a lot. cuz that indicates your HDD is not in DMA mode instead its in PIO made which is much slower.

Yes, the time estimate could be complete BS. I've noticed quite a few times that when I burn a DVD with a couple 2 Gig Ghost image files for backup purposes, the initial estimate is like 49 minutes or somesuch, but the actual burn time comes out closer to 9 minutes overall.

This is far, far from normal. You should be able to transfer 4 GB in about 2 minutes.

E.g. assuming you have slow drives which do 40 MB/s sequential transfers:

4 GB at 40 MB/s would take:

4 GB / 40 MB/s = (4 * 10^9 B) / (40 * 10^6 B/s) = 100s.

hd is in dma mode.... cpu utilization 6% to 18%

indexing service is off for both drives

let folder tranfer for half hour and only had 188 kb in recieving folder which is telling me the transfer all but stopped

thanks for the input and any more suggestions?

If you're overclocking, disable it and re-test.

Otherwise, try to isolate the problem to the new drive by measuring its performance in isolation. Try a benchmark program, switching cables, ports, etc.

HDTach can give a picture of what happens with read performance. Do the long test; look at the graph.

If you've isolated it to just the drive, then run some diagnostics on the drive and get in touch with the drive mfg for support.

What motherboard are you using, and if is it an Nforce chipset, do you have their IDE drivers installed?
