Transfering files over two PC's

I am going to get a whole new PC in about 6 more months. But this PC I have now, is still fully fucntional, etc... I want to put this PC into another room. (Can I simply get a new cable to put in my router to another PC to get internet access if I am using one already?)

Anyways, the main point I am saying is that: How can I transfer files over to my old PC from my new one? Will a simple cable do it? Do I need XP Pro to do this, or is Home just fine? For example, I downloaded the UT2007 demo on my old one, so how can i give the file to my new one? (by digitally, no burining DVDs or anything...)

I don't know much about this, so any input would help me out... thanks!!!

The easiest way is a basic home network. If your router includes a switch, most vaguely recent ones do, all you need to do is connect both machines to the router and configure them suitably(this probably just means setting both to DHCP). They'll then both be on the same network. From here you can just use built in Windows file sharing to transfer the files.

XP Home rather sucks for this purpose, lacking a lot of fine grained control; but it'll do for your task.

It depends on what you mean.

If you just want to transfer files you may connect your new hdd to the former one through the Network or directly through data cable.

But if you want to obtain absolutely the same new computer with the same OS, user accounts and programs installed, etc. you need to use cloning and imaging software. Then you will be able to clone your old hard drive (if new HDD is larger than old HDD) or image boot partition and save it to new HDD. You need to connect new HDD to old computer througt data cable or Network too. This way you will have old operating system with old programs and settings on new computer.

This is very easy to do with XP HOME. Just setup file sharing and then share the folders that you want to be able to access. The best bet is often to connect both machines to a router. However, you can connect them directly to each other with a piece of ethernet cable.
