Transfering data from PATA to SATA

Here's what I've done so far:

Successfully cloned HDD from 30Gb ATA to 80Gb SATA using Ghost. However, the drive will not completely boot. It gets stuck "starting Windows" and won't get to the desktop.

I have Partition Magic, but it keeps giving "Error 1513 Bad attribute in file record". The PM site says this error can usually be fixed by running chkdisk, but it doesn't help.

I tried a repair installation of XP to fix the registry, (knowing this might fix the booting prob.), but during installation, Windows could not load several ".dll" files" and Windows, when it finished, is all screwed up. Avast! doesn't work, WMP doesn't work, I can't use the CDROM for anything, and a lot of other things aren't right.

I've done a reapir with this very CD, so I know the CD is not the culprit.

All of the drivers for the mobo have been included in every operation, so it's not a driver issue.

What I need at this point, (since I've decided to do a fresh install on the SATA), is a reliable program that will allow me to transfer my program files from the ATA to the new XP installation on the SATA, (unless someone can help me transfer the entire HDD data).

I've been at this since yesterday. I'm out of patience. I need this to "just work".

Please, please, please, help!

i just did it a few days ago. made a partition on my new sata drive. formatted it and made it active in windows xp. used ghost to transfer everything. removed the pata drive and rebooted. everything worked great.

are you sure the new drive isn't messed up? or maybe the old one and it's copying some bad sectors?

If I do a freash install, the SATA works great. Tha ATA has been my primary drive without any probs for a few months. I'm working on the setup now, (this rig I'm on now is a DC unit).

Chkdisk finds no errors on either drive.

What about a data transfer tool?

Well, I tried to copy the disk image with Ghost, and it said there were bad blocks at the end of the drive. I'm doing a thurough chkdisk now. Hope they can be fixed.

Looks like my only options are starting my data all over, or living with a small drive.

I haven't done the True Image yet, but I'm guessing that will yield the same results, given the faulty blocks....

you need the sata drivers installed before it will boot with the sata drive

so while running the pata drive you can install the drivers.. or just install the sata drive as a non-boot harddrive (while running windows off the pata) then let windows boot up once and find the new sata drive.... then clone the pata to the sata

Go with TrueImage - Ghost really doesn't do well at cloning - many folks confuse cloning with imaging. A disk image is not actually bootable because the boot sector may not be where it belongs. Cloning is a perfect, bit by bit copy of a drive. Everything is where it is supposed to be. An image of a drive technically needs to be restored to achieve that result.

I'll do just that.

I now have the partition successfully copied to the SATA. However, the system won't completely boot, (doing what I stated before, getting stuck at "starting Windows"), unless I have boththe ATA and SATA installed.

I won't give up. If this doesn't work, I'll be forced to give TrueImage a try.

Thanks everyone. I'll update in a bit.

I would stick the sata drive in by itself, install windows, then hook the pata drive up as a slave and transfer your data over to the sata drive.

It's not just data, there's a lot of programs, games, and such. From what I understand, my program files, (i.e. games, etc...), won't work or else I'd have done that hours ago. If that will work, please, someone confirm they've done it.

I tried exactly what Boonesmi explained, but that didn't work, either. I'm still getting stuck at the starting Windows screen. Also, everytime I unplug the ATA drive, test the SATA drive, and re-plug in the ATA drive, windows keeps on detecting new hardware, and promts me "your new hardware may not work properly untill you restart...." and so on...

I'm very frustrated. Nothing seems to be working, and evrything appears to be working, (if you can follow that). Correct me if I'm wrong, but here's the proper order of operations to perform this task correctly:
1) Install the SATA drive and allow Windows to detect it and install the device drivers.
2) Restart per Windows prompt.
3) Upon successfull restart, restart again with Ghost in the FDD.
4) In Ghost, select Drive, to drive, and complete.
5) Restart per Ghost prompt.
6) Once in Windows, power down.
7) With power off, disconnect the ATA drive, then power up the computer.
8) You're done, (well, not me, but in theory).

The underlined part above is really the only part I may be doing wrong, but I've tried, like, three different configurations using Ghost. All of them yield the same result. The SATA drive will go as far as "Starting Windows", you know, the blue screen with the Windows logo that preceeds "Welcome"?

I'm truely at a loss. I can keep trying, but I'm not sure if it's worth all the down time. I use this computer for my buisness, and I've already lost nearly a whole days' work because of this. I thought this was an easy operation.

It's done! True Image worked, (and effotlessly, I might add)!

Anyone reading this thread should destroy thier Ghost and get True Image. If I would have used TI from the beggining, (4 p.m. yesterday), I would not have even started this thread.

Well, what more can I say? I'm done. The ATA partition has been successfully transfered to the SATA and it's being defragmented as I type this post. I can't thank snoturtle and the rest of you enough.

I noticed that one major difference between Ghost and TI was TI cloned the drive data and the drive letter, (Ghost did not copy the drive letter). I'm inclined to think this was an integral part of my problem.

Anywho, it's working and I couldn't be happier.

Thanks again to all those who helped.

😉
