Transfering data from old drive to SSD

I've already installed my new Intel 160 SSD into my system and loaded windows 7 (64 bit) on to the thing. Boots and works fine. My DVD RW and BluRay RW drives are recognized and work fine. Two original hard drives (spindle type) are also recognized. Everything is SATA. My original boot drive is a 300 GB with XP Pro and other applications, programs, etc. and is not quite half full. My other original hard drive is an unpartitioned 400 GB unit which was used for general storage and still has adequate space available. So this is what I'd like to accomplish.

I'd like to copy everything from the 300 GB drive to the 400 GB drive including the original operating system which I would like to retain as an emergency boot system. My first question is can it be done and does it makes sense? Next I would like to delete everything from the 300 drive except the operating system and use that drive in another computer. Finally I would like to copy only essential applications and programs from the 400 drive to the windows 7 SSD.

I have a sneaky feeling that alot of this may be impossible especially as regards to the 64 bit windows 7 vs the 32 bit XP. I am not sure at all so could someone direct me here. Any advice or comments will be much appreciated. Hope I have not been too long winded.

yes - you want to do a fresh install. and then you must reinstall all the apps and make sure they are compatible. ie nero6 for xp - no dice on win7.

it's a pain. but the right thing to do.

Many thanks Emulex. What is the best software I can use to copy the contents of my former boot drive to another hard drive. I had acronis on the original system. Not sure if it will work with the W7 64 bit. Might there be a W7 compatible version which I can download?

try the acronis (aka intel migration tool) easy migrate tool. should work.

or use another boxen thats win7 32bit and have it do the clone

Basically what you would have to do is like what taltamir said, Image the 300GB drive to the 400GB drive and then use a partition editing program like gparted to resize the partition to fill the entire volume. However, when you mention copying programs and applications from the 400gb to the SSD this will more than likely not work unless you are copying the installation files. Programs cannot be transferred from one computer to another and work unless they are standalone (basically the program doesn't need to be installed on the computer in order for you to open it and run it). Hope this helps.

Ok thanks guys. Had to walk away from it for a while but am back now. Will give the partition copy over to the 400 a try and see how that turns out.
