transfering data from laptop harddrive

Is there any way to transfer data from laptop hard drive to desktop or another hard drive without the use of laptop|? (If laptop is damaged)
Are there any standard cables that connect to laptop HDD and can be connected directly to desktop computer ide cable?
Anyone knows where can they be ordered? Are there any standard or are they brand specific?

Thanks
Robert

Thre is an adaptor to plug a laptop hard drive into a desktop ide connector. Shouldn't be more than about $5 and available at any good computer parts store.

Yes but several people on the board have reported getting them off ebay recently and found that they don't work.

What, you don't believe me??!! HA

Here is one of the threads. Can't find the other one and I'm not spending any more time looking. Sorry.
