I currently have a 160gb Seagate 7200.7.

I was considering getting the 150gb raptor to i) improve performance (load times) and ii) allow for the current HD to be a backup.

What procedure do I go through if I want to make the new raptor the primary HD and then have the seagate as a mirror backup of it should the raptor fail.

thx

Well first you can clone the seagate to the raptor, but I wouldn't suggest using the seagate as a mirror backup(assuming you mean raid-1, because I think you would slow down the raptor by raiding it with a slower drive). I would recomend using something like Norton Ghost, or Acronis True Image to do your backup.

I don't plan on doing RAID, so I think Ghost might be a good idea. So are these the steps:

1) Install Raptor.
2) Clone Seagate to Raptor (how?)
3) Make raptor the primary hard drive (how? is this a master/slave thing?)
4) Format seagate (do I need to do this?)
5) Use Ghost to make image of raptor onto seagate (how frequently does ghost "update" whats on the backup drive?)

Sorry for the very simple q's - I've never operated with more than 1 HD so this is new to me.

I'm subscribing to this. :p I just bought a SATA drive because my IDE ran out of space. And I want all of the data on my IDE to be on the SATA drive.

Hi, Older cables will be MASTER/SLAVE. Swap the jumpers to swap the drives. Newer cables have the connectors color coded and are CABLE SELECT (CS). Both drives are to be set to CS. Swap the drives by swapping the cable connectors. It's understood that this only applies to two drives on the same cable. Good Luck, Jim

2) If you use ghost (there are other apps that work just as well) then you connect both drives to the system, put the cd in and tell it to clone the HD, it's simple enough.
3) When you next reboot the computer go into the BIOS and change the boot priority so the SATA drive is just under the CD drive. Also changing the jumpers on the IDE drive to slave wouldn't be a bad idea.
4/5) The introduction to ghost on the CD would give you all the details, but the short version is that it'll worry about all those bits for you, how often it updates and how it does it is up to you.

His new drive uses SATA, so there are no jumpers that he needs to change. Switching the boot order is done through the BIOS.

Again, I would strongly recommend actually looking at threads before responding to them. Although many of your posts are unintentionally hilarious...

Bob's response covered it pretty well.
