Transfer Windows to new laptop?

Hello not sure if I should be this on "computer help" or O/S, sorry if I need to go else where.

Quick question, I have a work laptop with is a Lenovo X220 2nd gen i5 how likely I can take the HD out and throw it in to a X230 2nd gen i5 and every work?

I know best is to new install but because of policy it will take forever.

Possible it will work since the systems are pretty similar. However, unless the OS is a retail version, it might not activate properly on the new computer since an OEM license cannot be legally transferred to a different computer.

I can simply change the key so that is not an issue.

If it doesn't bsods at the first boot, you just have to go to ad/remove programs right away, uninstall all drivers and re install the ones for the newer model.
If it bsods, try safe mode and uninstall the driver packages from safe mode.
Since they are both 2nd gen i5's, you've got a 99% chance in a first normal boot without a bsod. The chip-sets should be fairly similar.
