Transfer Windows 7

I have a hard drive that I am taking from my old desktop and I am going to put it into my brand new build that I just got. I was wondering if I could just hook up the SATA cables and it would work? If not, I would appreciate some help. I can not afford to buy a brand new Windows 7 disk. I know it's possible to re use my operating system in my new build, I'm just not sure how to do it. Can someone tell me how to do this? Buying a new Windows 7 is NOT an option. Thank you all for your help!

Note : I do not need any of my old files on the hard drive, I already backed them up on an external hard drive. Just need the operating system to be up and running.
