Basically I need to transfer over 100gig of data from one server to a new one. Its not a migration or a repair, its just a portion of the data is being moved.

Drag N Drop: will take for ever and sometimes will error out or forget to copy some files..dont ask why,...ive just seen it happen before.

i was thinking of RAR'ing and then transferring the rar's and uncompressing them

any other ideas?

i dont see why drag n drop causes errors.
i think the procedure would be to restart both server and make sure nobody is using them. then try to transfer the files.
zipping and unzippin will actually take twice as much to transfer the data.
i am assuming you are transfering through LAN. any chance you can dump the data on a USB drive and then from USB to the other server?
if not that, then perhaps if you keep backup of your server on tape or any other media you should be able to use the backup to transfer the data on the other server.
again another option would be to do a raid1 on the server if they both use the same disks and then remove the mirror drive and install it on the other server.

one can come up with millions of ideas but in a company environment what matters is what is cost effective and efficient.

rar ir into 500mb chunks and ftp/dad it over to the new server. At least with raring you can chunk it and have a verfication method to make sure nothing is bad.

Shove it all onto a USB/firewire external hdd, copy it to the new system.
That way, you have a mini backup as well if you want.
