Transfer iPod files back to iMac?

I have a situation where i have an ipod classic older version that has a lot of sermons on them that I would like to transfer to my iMac so I can replace my ipod Classic with a newer one and not lose the sermons on my old ipod Classic. This ipod classic is not synced to my iTunes on my iMac, so I don't want all the contents wiped out. Do i need some software to backup the files?
