Transfer files to new XP install

yesterday i had to wip my hard drive or get a new one and put xp pro on it. either way i had to do a fresh install because of suspected corrupt boot sector in my windows partition.
anyhow, i purchased a Maxtor Ultra 16 sata, and partitioned it and did as fresh install of windows. is there any way to transfer some installed programs and games in the old hdd to my new windows and have them be recognized???

Some games will run if you just copy the program folders. Some programs will do the same. Just recreate your shortcuts and your good to go. It all depends on the program. I think it pretty much depends on whether or not that program uses the registry for storing certain configuration settings. It's always worth a try, and if you can get into the registry on your old machine by booting to a bootdisk like bartPE or something, then you could even try to restore the registry settings for those games.

Look under hkey local machine>Software>game or program you want to copy

I believe the File and Settings Transfer wizard (start, programs, accessories, system tools can help with this.

Very few Windows apps can simply be copied over. Many install .dlls all over the place and make registry changes too.

Should do this:

1. Create image of old hard drive.
2. Restore image onto "new" hard drive.
3. Boot machine and put Windows CD into the cd rom drive and select "repair" when it comes up.
4. Done

All your apps will be available.
