Transfer files - cant ping, cant ftp

OK, I must be doing something really dumb.

I have two Win2K laptops. One is my new laptop and the other is my old one. I'm trying to easily transfer files from the old to the new.

I set static IP's and confirmed through ipconfig. I cant ping! I've tried two crossover cables and a switch. I've tried setting ethernet speeds (10MBpsFullDuplex, 100MFull, etc.).

I was hoping to run FTP server on the new laptop and send the files over using an FTP client on the old one.

Any ideas?

I think I've tried most of the obvious, but here are the IP's I'm using:

10.0.0.2
10.0.0.3

with a netmask of 255.255.255.0

Funny thing is I can ping my printer but not the other laptop.

One thing that's unique is that both systems are logged in with the same user, password, and domain. Seems like this layer should not have anything to do with IP, but I could be wrong.

I've also tried 10.1.1.2 and 10.1.1.3. I've also tried having my DHCP give it addresses - still no go.

As an alternative to a possible solution, I'm not too concerned with getting ping to work(although it would help diagnose some problems). My goal is to transfer files from one laptop to another over the fastest comm path possible. Since they are corp laptops, I cant mess around with the domains or workgroups.

Suggestions?

Somehow, I can ping now. I logged in with an account on the local machine. Other than that, everything's the same (IP, netmask, gateway). I guess the type of login you are affects ping. I didnt think that would be the case.

Anyway, now I cant FTP to my XP machine running FTP server. I can from a Win98 box. Again, same sort of IP info.

The non-working system is 10.0.0.5, 255.255.255.0, 10.0.0.2
The working system is 10.0.0.7, 255.255.255.0, 10.0.0.2

The working system is Win98 logged into my home network domain(Win2K). The non-working system is Win2K logged into the local machine.

If I need the Win2K machine on the home domain, can I add that without messing up the other corporate domain info? I've heard that if I change it, I may have to be admin to add back into the corporate domain.

Looks like authentication issues. Is your XP box on your home 2k domain?

Can u change the workgroup on the 2k box ( the one logged into the locl machine).

You will have to add that user/pass to the domain I believe

No, the 2K laptop is not part of my home network domain. My 98 and XP machines are part of the 2K server domain.

To clarify:
Server=2K Server
PC1=XP on domain
PC2=2K laptop on local
PC3=98 laptop on domain

From PC1 and PC3 I can ftp and do things. From PC2, I cant seem to do anything. At least now I can ping.

Again, all I'm trying to do is transfer files from PC2 to any machine so I can back it up.

Domain membership should not affect FTP authentication at all as long as you're trying to log into the FTP server with a local account.
