My roommate and I are bailing on DirecTV but want to get the movies we've recorded off of it before turning the DVR back in.

Is there any way to do this? Can we just pop the lid and transfer HDD to HDD??

No, its encrypted. There is no quick and easy way to do that.

you can send the signal to a dvd recorder and record them while watching them

thats about the only what i have heard of

With Direct TV you cannot. I looked into this years ago. Ive been with Dish a long time now and you can convert recordings to mobile which i assume can be off loaded to a media player. I would look into it further but I have no use for it. My point though is I think Dish allows it.

dish doesnt really allow it the way you are describing
what they allow is transfer to an external hard drive
that ehd can then be used on the new dvr

Yes, you can. It's just a bit expensive and time-consuming.

You'll need two pieces of hardware, though.

First, a HDCP stripper. It usually comes in the guise of a HDMI splitter. Plenty of them online - look on ebay. ViewHD is one such brand. Just make sure you buy from a reputable dealer.
Second, a HDMI capture device like the Elgato HD60.
Total cost should be under $200.
And then, you just play each video you want to keep from the DVR, and capture the HDMI output through your computer.
Yes, it has to be done in real time.

Hmmm so why do they have an option in the DVR menu to convert recording for mobile use? That tells me that it can be converted and used with a mobile device. What am I missing here?

genie go used to, and the mobil app currently allows
putting recordings on a mobile device

they are encrypted

you can try various methods, but the only one i have heard that will work is to record while watching with a dvd recorder/vcr/ect

there may be other methods i am not aware of.
