Looking at this in the most benign way possible, with this policy conservatives are proclaiming that they are so thin-skinned that they want to deny citizens basic rights because they think a single field in a database ought to be filled out in such-and-such way. It's beyond pathetic.

However I'm really wondering whether denying LGBTQ+ people access to Internet-accessible devices will come before shutting down their ability to travel inside the US.

Yep, any application with "X" is being rejected. And, any existing passport with "X" is being considered invalid for use as well.

My info is direct from a former colleague that now works on some of the systems used by customs. They're a SME in that space w/15+yrs.

Anyone with the X is being flagged in the db and any attempted scans/entries will be triggering a denial. It's an ongoing process as not everything is updated on the same cycle. DoS approvals were first, not sure if GE and CBP are fully rolled out yet.

I think there is/was some thought of "how many possible instances of approved transgender individuals would be attempting to re-enter?" and the risk matrix calculation came out as "not enough to stop us from doing it". The # of passport/GE applications would be quite a bit higher.
