I don't know but it had an error code. I'm going to post below what I did at explorerforum to see if anyone has any advice here. any help is definitely appreciated 🙂.

ODB II error code need help! : P1762 Overdrive Band Failed Off

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My check engine light has been going on and off the past 2 weeks. The overdrive light does not come on unless I push the button though. I just got this code from going to autozone, P0 1762, a google search turns up "Overdrive Band Failed Off"

Anyone know how serious this problem is? How much it will cost to fix? I read one person had a

link 1

this thread too appears to be helpful.

No 2nd Gear
No 3rd Gear
No Engine Braking In Manual 1st.
Out of specification pressures controlled by the transmission main control valve body separator plate may be the cause.

I'm thinking the one in bold may be my problem, or a bad solenoid. The transmission still shifts fine. However the past week having cruise control set to 60 mph the rpm's were bouncing from 2 to 2 1/2, on a flat road. The car drove fine yesterday. Could this be related to code? On second thought my right tired was flat, so maybe the increased rpm's were related to the tire slipping because it was partially flat. Also my car has been making a strange noise the past few months as I wrote in another thread. One mechanic said it could be the transfer case clutch solenoid sticking some making the noise, the noise is like an eletric motor whirring. Perhaps its the transmission pump I'm hearing? Cause I have a blown gasket in the transmission?

"Check engine on, is this a switch/solenoid problem or is a band adjustment truely needed?"

except my check engine light is going on and off.

How about you take it to a skilled mechanic?

i want to know how much it will cost. i'm not having something repaired that doesn't need it.

ATOT is not going to be able to help you.
Oviously something has caused the overdrive gear of your transmission to fail, It could be any number of things, and none of them are very cheap to fix.
Take it to a shop and have them check the transmissions computer out.
What car is it BTW?

its a 98 ford explorer xlt. ps, the overdrive light is not on. just the check engine light. and placing the car in overdrive causes the rpm's go to higher, which is expected. so i don't think its that.

The overdrive light is for when you turn the overdrive on and off, like when towing someting, or driving up a steep incline. It can indicate problems with the transmission, but not always.
The best advice still is to take it to a shop and get it diagnosed properly.
Modern electronic shift auto transmissions are very complicated animals, and require specialised equipment to diagnose and repair.
My only other sugestion is to not take it to Aamco or Cottman, or other large chain. Most won't bother to daignose the problem properly and will attempt to sell you a costly full rebuild no mater if it needed it or not.

Putting car in OD should make the rpms go lower.

You need a mechanic.

oops when the o/d light comes on it means i turned it off. so thats when the rpm's go higher. my bad i didn't clarify it lol

Could well be the syncromesh?

whats that?
speeds up or slows down the cogs in a gearbox so that the teeth match up in terms of speed when you mesh them together (ie engage the gear)

well i'm not really having any problems shifting though. not yet anyways, and i hope i don't! knocks on wood lol. i don't know 🙁
