Tranny goes *clunk* when putting it in Reverse

'96 Sentra 5 speed with ~150k miles, clutch recently replaced.

Sometimes when I put it in reverse, it will go "clunk" right when I hit the gate.
It makes a decently loud clunk noise, and I feel the vibration through the shifter. The whole ordeal lasts for less than a second, and I can drive in R just fine. Only the noise and vibration during that split second is bothersome.

If I drive around in the forward gears for awhile, and then need to go reverse again, I'll experience the same clunking.

Sometimes if I just start the car and go right into reverse (cars been parked for awhile), it won't engage.
I'll gas and clutch out, but the car won't move and I hear a "whirring" noise.
It will take another 2 or 3 tries before I can get it "in gear".

I've noticed that on the times where it clunks, if I then put it back in neutral, and try reverse again, it will go in smoothly without clunking.

I don't have problems with any other gears 1 through 5.
Therefore the severity of this issue is low and I'm not really worried but it just got me thinking.

I don't feel that it's getting any worse either. It's been this way since I picked up the car at 120k miles.

i don't know what kind of weird sex you're into, but please don't detail it here. not that there's anything wrong with that.

I find I have to shift it into 4th and then shift it into R to get it to go in smoothly, or to not make a nasty synchro grinding sound.

Car is completely still.
I don't like putting additional stress on the clutch by shifting forward/reverse while car is moving.

I'd check the fluid level for the clutch and trans just to be sure, but if you don't have any problems in any other gears I doubt anything is seriously wrong. I've got in the habit of putting it into 4th and then into reverse in my Jeep otherwise it will make a clunk sometimes too. I think some transmissions are just like that.
