Trains / Subways

Have you ever used them?

I took a trip on a train as a kid, (maybe 5 years old) and also rode a subway back in the early 60's when my family took a trip to Chicago.

never took a train in my life and never used a subway.didn't have on in los angeles till 2-3 years ago

Took the train to commute a few times... didn't really like it... bus was surprisingly faster and also more convenient. NY/NJ Transit isn't bad considering the amount of traffic into the city.

Used the subway pretty much every day I didn't have time to walk or was lazy to walk the 8 blocks to my old workplace near MSG.

Subway in Philly, "People Mover" in Detroit, the "L" in Chicago, and a night train from Nice to Barcelona. Or was it Barcelona to Madrid? Or something like that. Funny story, I was touring Spain, France, and Italy with a group of people from various schools, and there were two guys in my train cabin that were a little obsessed with knives... When I woke up in the morning, my pants and bedsheets were shredded. Kind of freaky...

Oh yeah, I usually take the train when I go to New York City. New Jersey Transit is the largest state-wide mass transit system in the country. 🙂

Took trains and tubes in London.
I've taken the high-speed line (PATCO) from NJ to Philly.
I've taken the train from NJ to NYC, and the subway in NYC...
I really like riding trains, actually. It's kinda fun.

- Bart System when I used to live in Bay Area
- Chicago's L when I was visiting
- Atlanta's MARTA when I lived in Atlanta
- London's subway when I was there for a day
- Paris' subway each of the three times I was there
- France's TGV to go back and forth from Lyon to Paris
- Indian train, but no idea what rail it was
- Washington DC's Metro while visitng
- NYC Metro when visitng my brother

I am sure there are more, I just can't remember.

i used to take the subway from jfk to penn station, and then take amtrak up to albany

oh, and when i was in england, we took the train from Rochester into London

and

a couple of trips to the netherlands, we took the train from Schiphol Airport up to Groningen

took a train to vancouver once.

took the london subway a ton when i was there.

took a train from cuzco to machu pichu

took the automated train in kuala lumpur once.

does the passenger train between terminals at DFW count?

Chicago - Commuter Trains, ELs, Subways
New York - Subway
Seoul - Subway, Commuter Trains
Tokyo - Subway, Commuter Trains
Hong Kong - Subway
SF - BART
Washington DC - Metro
AMTRAK - Chicago to Denver
Vietnam - Hanoi to Sapa

Seoul Subway is the most useful, Washington DC is the nicest (unlimited funding, apparently)

hmm...

Philadelphia - subway and regional rail (during school I take the subway all the time)
New York City - subway
Montreal - subway
Toronto - subway

I guess thats about it. Crummy, becuase I love subways.

I use 'em whenever I can if it's a subway/tram/etc type. It's unfortunate that Denver has one of the worst public transportation systems in the world (IMO, hehe). Busses aren't convenient but I do use the local Light Rail which I like a lot. But it's way too small to be of any use outside of downtown denver (at least until the highway extensions are built)

but i've used the subway systems in Paris and London. I liked both but London's was my favorite. I dunno what it is, but I love using subway systems.

The only time I've been on a subway is in Mexico City. Those doors close very quickly!

I think the only train I've been on was in Disney World.

hmm lets see...

Wash. DC- Subway
Wash. DC to Baltimore- MARC train
wash or Baltimore to NYC- Amtrak
NYC to suburbs- MetroNorth and the Long Island one
Montreal- Subway
Boston- Subway
NYC- Subway
London- Subway

Took the T in Boston, the Metro in DC, the BART in the Bay Area (CA), Amtrak up and down the So. Cal coastline, and I think thats about it. Subways can be really good if they actually go to the places that people want to go. I love them if they do what I just said. If there was a decent one in So. Cal (e.g. OC, LA, SD, et al) then I might consider selling my car.

I've taken the Green & Blue Lines on the way to a Laker game or two and I can freely say it was a most pleasant experience. Green Line station is only about a mile away and the Blue Line stops in front of Staples so it's convenient as heck.

I also had to rely on the damn MTA buses and the various rail lines here in L.A. to get to school and such for awhile. Thankfully, haven't had to go through that ordeal for years. 🙂

When you have the option of having a drop-top to drive around in this climate, needing to take public transit is simply agonizing--even moreso. Give me wind in my hair or give me death!😀

I have always been fascinated with trains and have taken trains all over the place. I have been fortunate enough to take quite a few excursions pulled by Norfolk and Western 1218, 611, and Southern 4501 in addition to normal train trips.

Taking the train is easier, less stressful, than driving but there isn't a direct enough route for me to use it for my commute.
