That is what I call the "second squirrel effect". When squirrels chase each other, the first squirrel will run across the road knowing it is safe for him to cross but not having evaluated the situation for the safety of the second squirrel. The second squirrel will run after the first, believing it to be safe to cross since the first squirrel did so safely. Unfortunately, the second squirrel did not evaluate the situation for his own safety, and just followed the first one. The second squirrel will often get hit by the approaching car.

After having identified this situation with squirrels, it amazes me how often I observe this situation to happen in humans. I even find myself in the second position sometimes and must remind myself not to cross until after the approaching vehicle has passed.
