Owego NY woman critical after train collision

This happened yesterday:

...."The Canadian Pacific Railway freight train, consisting of three engines and 48 cars, was headed to Binghamton from Buffalo, investigating Trooper James Schweiger said.

The impact threw Maloney's 1995 Lincoln 85 feet. The car flipped several times, coming to rest on its side in the grassy shoulder alongside the tracks. .....

She must have not been paying attention if the train was only going 40 and she didn't notice in time to back up

crossing them. and she got stuck

How does one get stuck of all places on a 5 foot wide strip of train tracks?

That happens all the time in movies so it must be true!

yeah and the tool box is too busy trying to start the car and not busy trying to exit the car........dumasses thats what insurance is for.

The report does not say she was stuck on the tracks, instead it says "struck".

She probably should have stayed in drive and gunned it across the tracks instead of taking the extra time to put the car in reverse.

why was she on them in the first place i'm confused now. How do you get stuck? I am imagining a giant blob of gum stuck to her car.

Stupid driver.

One of the few cases where I agree that the person should be a candidate for a Darwin award. (Depending on the outcome of her medical treatment, of course.)

I do hope she recovers from her injuries. But they are her own damn fault.

consisting of three engines and 48 cars

Crikey...you guys have big trains....ours never really get more than one engine and 12 cars....maybe 16 and a pinch.

"She pulled onto the tracks and apparently noticed the train, and was trying to back up," Schweiger said. Police said they found the wrecked car's gear shift lever still in reverse.

True testement to women reverse parking etc.....;)

Arent there flashing red lights when trains are coming? And it still doesnt explain why she'd stop on the tracks in the first place instead of just driving over them like normal people.

This is why I get over them ASAFP, or if I get stuck, I'll abandon the car... I don't need to die a la Leathal Weapon 4...

The Three engines alone are a heck of a lotta mass!!!! 48 cars is nothing special - we often see trains of over 100 cars go through the local area.

might be an unmarked crossing. you're supposed to stop before the crossing and look for the train. in addition the engineer is supposed to be blowing the horn.

pretty stupid to stop and try to reverse instead of gunning it across

I guess I just find it hard to justify ever having your car on the track for more than the 2 seconds that is required to pass over them.

Same here..trains with over 100 cars are very common.

Thats pretty fast why the heck werent there flashing lights for a track that has trains traveling that fast. I have track crossing wtih no lights by me but the trains are super long and super slow and you'd have to be a moron from a bad movie to wind up on the tracks when the train came.

You should have plenty of time to move out of the way of a train if its going 40. Unless your not paying attention. Which you should be doing if your passing over an active set of train tracks.

Said that it was a private road so it didn't have any lights or gates

Uhhh right.
Next time you are near a road with a 40MPH speed limit, do a little observation of just how fast a car approaching at that speed gets to you. It's pretty quick. Now picture it on a dark, rural railroad crossing with no signal, and the view of the track obscured by trees and other obstacles.

It's probably not nearly as simple as you think it is.

That train is a small one average coal train around is is 70-100 cars with 4-5 engines.

I can hear the lady talking to the police. "Honest officer i didn't see the 20' high 1/2 mile long train with headlights and, blowing its horn when I got there"

But buy law at a half mile from any crossing railroad engineers have to start sounding the horn I believe its 2 short and one long. Thats hard to miss.
