Haven't heard much about this one, 10 cars filled with vinyl chloride are being drained and burned off creating the picture above and below

not to worry though, mayor Pete and the DOT have promised no new regulations on the railroads so profits are safe for investors!

In the aftermath of a fiery Ohio train derailment, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg’s department has not moved to reinstate an Obama-era rail safety rule aimed at expanding the use of better braking technology, even though a former federal safety official recently warned Congress that without the better brakes, “there will be more derailments [and] more releases of hazardous materials.”

/still using civil war era tech to brake trains?

What we should be doing is nationalizing the railroads: the current companies have shown they cannot be good stewards of their infrastructure. Then we can go through the process of bringing track into good repair, and re-double tracking areas where RRs tore up lines to save a buck, and thus we can go back to having railroads that function. Then, if private companies want to operate on the trackage, they have to follow some rules, such as max train lengths to fit on passing sidings and following their allotted time slot for a schedule.

JFC this is just getting worse every day. This is the company supposedly doing the EPA testing at the site in Ohio now...not a good track record of this same job elsewhere...

yeah, lotsaunverified reports of animals dying in droves around that area right now, humans? just stay indoors....
I've seen stuff on birds, and they are known to be far more sensitive.

It seems like the big issue, without looking into it further at the moment, is that there is an atmospheric inversion, which is trapping stuff in the lower atmosphere. Very akin to the great smog incident in London decades ago, or a similar incident in the US a decade or two before the London one.

The Donora Smog incident near Pittsburgh. Killed 20 and sickened 6000 before they convinced the plant to shutdown.

In KMFJD's defense when you go to CNNs front page you've got to scroll waaaaaaay down, past stories titled "Trying to meal prep more this year? Here are 27 useful products that make it easy" and "This animal shelter reveals the perfect way to get back at your crappy ex"
