Traffic violation etiquette?

Okay, it seems to me that a lot of people have varied opinions on this, but now I'm in it and want to see what others would do.

Two friends argue over who's going to drive to an event both are attending, one finally wins. While driving, the person gets a ticket. Is the passenger responsible for half that ticket?

This is a simplified version of my problem, my friend hit part of a parked car. Now the friend thinks its reasonable for me to pay half because she was driving to both our benefits and she would do the same for me. I'm thinking that that's not so fair.

What would you do?

As for this part, I don't have any friends that would pay up becasue they were getting a ride...It is just not fair to them.

I would lend money perhaps or my friends would let me borrow money if I was in a jam, but as for making you responsible for her actions, that's just wrong...

Whoever is driving is responsible for the safety of the other people in the car. Staying out of accidents is the responsibility of the driver, not the passengers. She should pay for the car, and actually, if someone was that selfish around me, I'd be liekly to break off the friendship. I'd never even CONSIDER asking someone else to pay for my mistake like that.

Did you hit the car?

There we go.

Thats how I feel Goosemaster! If I hit it, I'd eat it on the insurance! I can't believe friendship has come down to a scratched plastic bumper on a Crown Victoria.

I'd qeustion what kind of friend they were by asking that.
Now, if you two were goin along, she (or he) was driving and you reach over, smack them hard to suprise them, reach your foot over, jam the accelerator down, then with your hadn grab the wheel and yank on it, causing the car to swerve and hit a car, then ya I'd say you were liable for half. But, otherwise, I'd just laugh and say "well, ya shoulda let me drive then"

***EDIT***
Ya, I think your liable actually. just tell'm that YOUR half is covered by the insurance, and walk off :D

Okay, well maybe I should throw some new variables in, I realized I probably made the situation more in my favor.

1. It was a big U-Haul, and thats why we were arguing over who would drive, because neither of us have ever driven a big truck before.
2. We were picking up furniture at a store with the U-Haul.

Now whaddya say?

I managed to rent a U-haul (w/o having ever driven one before), drive it over 300 miles picking up and dropping off furniture, and return it undamaged. It's still her fault, not the truck's, nor yours.

i think your friend should pay for everything.. if you two are roommates thus the furniture moving, this will make for an awkward situation.

Bullseye. Which is why I'm even asking. We just started our year lease. I didn't think I'd be signing up for this sort of crap.

Seriously though, driver error. If a couple of friends said "Hey let's go to the coast" and something happened on the way there/back I wouldn't hold them responsible if I was the one driving. How much sense does that make?

Who's furniture? If it was yours, as she offered to drive, thats kinda sticky situation. If its hers and you were helpin, then you for SURE have no blame.
So, who's furniture was it?

I see what you're getting at but IMO it shouldn't matter who's stuff it was.

That's almost like saying if I got into an accident on the way to work, my employer would be at fault for requiring me to be there. ;)

it shouldnt matters who furniture it is.. shes the one driving and the one that made the mistake.. not you! thats crazy!! You dont want to be friends with people like this. When she asked you for money, thats just proving shes a messed up person. I wouldnt pay for crap and if she didnt want to move in with you, make her break the lease! DONT PAY FOR IT MAN! reading wat you wrote pissed me off. What kinda person does that??
