I live in California and you can't take traffic school twice within an 18 month period. But I heard that you can ask to take traffic school as a repeat offender and instead of the 8 hour class it would be 10 hours. Does anyone know anything else about this? Where do you ask for this anyway?

They said it exists when I last went to traffic school (last weekend) but you have to ask for it

Hmm, they had a similar timeframe in FL, you couldn't "elect" to take the school in place of points twice in a certain time period. However (at least in the past) you could go to court to fight your ticket and when they had the pre hearing the Judge offers pleabargains to weed out the weak cases. At that time they usually offer driving school in place of points and it did not count as an elected time.

Last time I went to court they offered me $100 no points no fine for a 9MPH over the limit speeding ticket I had no real chance of beating. I was all over that. That was more than 5yrs ago, so, courts may have caught on to this workaround, but, I suspect not.

I took this program.. you just have to tell the traffic court judge that you want to participate in the program.

They give you a form and you must sign up with a traffic school that participates in the program. Not all of them do. Anyway the gist of it is you do a 16-hour course as opposed to the 8-hour one.

If you go to a traffic school with cool instructors (like I did) they'll sign you off after 4 hours. ;)

Holy isht...16 hours? Wow. I thougt 10 hours was bad. So you do have to go to court to ask for it then... ahhh i see. Thanks a lot guys. This isn't for me... it's for my friends boyfriend... he was stupid enough to get caught in the carpool lane by himself... but he already took traffic school last june. He has to pay $300... and does he go to court first or pay and then go to court to ask for the repeat offender program...? Well... i suppose either way... he has to go see the judge and kiss some @$$.

If you failed a driving test thats sad, but I don't like the idea of people trying to get around the system. Doesn't California have a big problem with bad drivers.

No one said anything about failing a driving test. In CA, when you get a ticket you can get it wiped off your record by taking an 8-hour driver's ed course. If you get another moving violation within 16 months you can take the course again but this time it's twice as long. No one said anything about "getting around the system" either.

AFAIK Californian drivers aren't as bad as Colorado or Florida drivers. :)

BoYraCeR - your friend has to go to court (or the pre-court, whatever it's called) and tell the judge he would like to participate in the repeat offender program, after that he'll get the paperwork and pay the $300. Sometimes the judge will be nice and waive the fee but dont expect to be very lucky. :)

If you even have the opportunity to go to traffic school within that period of time then maybe you should to be driving period.

Oh ok... thanks!... that's gonna be a fun 16 hours.

Hmmm... as far as california drivers are concerned... yah whatever... you should go to those damn third world countries... or even italy for that matter... crazy as hell... funny thing is they're going like 120mph on a two lane highway next to people going 70 and don't get into as many accidents as we do.

Does anyone know if California still offers a repeat offender's traffic school. The last post here was in 2001.

there usually is no limit to COURT AWARDED traffic school.

You take it to court and have to negotiate it.

ive never ever heard of repeat offender traffic school and im pretty experienced in this, having gotten 12 tickets in the last year or two. they must not do it in the bay area where i live. i did do online traffic school and it wa much easier than sitting in a room for 10 hours. it only took me 40 minutes total, you could even turn back to the text and correct your answers to pass the quizzes. the final consisted of the exact same questions that were on the quizzes so be sure to take note of any quiz questions you had trouble with
