Traffic jams on interstate 95?

I'll be going on a road trip in December from Montreal to New York City, Washington D.C. and then Miami. I was wondering the state of traffic flow on the Interstate 95 between NYC and North Carolina (near Raleigh). Are there a lot of jams or is it mostly fluid at day? Should I plan to drive at around 65 mph or will it go waaay slower?

Thank you in advance!

95 Through baltimore and DC is UGLY during rush hour. going south, you definitely want to avoid 4pm and after...pretty much before then should be ok during the work week

Doh! I was thinking to leave NYC at around 3pm on a saturday (December 28th) to get in DC around 7pm. Well, I guess I'll have to change that up.

It's better to learn it now than there :)

Yeah, it's a good thing your changing your arrival time. Traffic would be quite messy during the last 2 to 3 hours of your trip from the time you hit the North side of Baltimore until you reached D.C. Then again, you could just leave at 3:00 as you planned, but then take a break when you get to the north side of Baltimore. There's an area known as "White Marsh" which features lots of shopping. You could stop off there for a while while traffic died down. Then, hit the road again about 7:00 or 7:30 P.M. to go onto D.C.

Traffic around December is going to be pretty unpredictable. I'm not sure how many people will be travelling in the air around the holidays this year because of the stuff that happened last Fall. I remember travelling last season and the interstate was packed around Thanksgiving and Xmas.... I would expect it to be half as bad this year from terror threat scares. If you're heading all the way to Miami, I95 would be the best choice of travel since taking I81 would be a stretch. If you want any alternate routes via I81 to Miami, talk to me, I know all of them. :D

That's a good idea (in fact, I'll be doing this :) ). Never been to Baltimore before, so I'll stop there, eat and roam around a bit, then go down to DC. Thanks!

And I know traffic can be quite intense. Last year, I travelled in that area by bus, and it took us 6 hours to go from DC to Raleigh.... and it was at night :(

The only time I drove on 95 between NYC and Baltimore was saturday between 1pm and 4pm. The traffic was mostly ok, although you could see occasional congestions.

Watch out on 95 from West Palm south to Ft. Lauderdale. The place is a mess right now.
Yep. 'specially during rush hour(s). If you find you will be hitting rush hour, get off 95 and take the turnpike. You can hop on the turnpike in Ft. Pierce and get back off on 595 (ft.laud) and save some time. Not sure how much tolls you'll pay, maybe $2-$4?

Amen, Brother. Are they ever going to finish that stretch of Interstate? The traffic from Lauderdale south can also be brutal with total grid lock after a bad accident, a daily or more often occurance. Normal and rush hour traffic is bad also.

They call it DIE-95 down here.

One of the reasons I'm glad I moved away from Broward county Andy & Max but sorry we moved here to Georgia too, the roads are nice here but not enough of them for the volume, at least there are a bunch of parallel roads like University, Flamingo etc.
