Is it really bad? I've never driven during that time. I gotta go to day for Comic Con.

uh, i would try to go at some other time. If you take 73 you can save some time, but it'll cost you $3 or something like that (73 is a toll road). The 405 at that time of day is a no-no.

He's coming from Irvine, which is a straight shot down I5.

Depends on which part of Irvine--my aunt lives near UCI and that's the 405.

Right now, the I5 is in the 20-30mph range from Carlsbad all the way down to Del Mar and its not even 2pm yet.

Irvine through south OC will be lots of traffic. then it will open up a bit, then slow down as your near carlsbad then open up, then slow down again when you near SD. maybe take you 2.5-3 hours at worst.

Leaving Irvine at 6PM? Traffic will be getting lighter by the time you hit Carlsbad. Shouldn't be too bad.

the 405S becomes the 5S like <10 miles south of UCI

I drove from Irvine to SD on Friday at 9PM and it took forever....
The 405 is fine near Irvine because it's like 20 lanes wide. Once you go closer to LA downtown, it gets to be hell. Near UCLA? That's a disaster.

Not as bad many may let you to think. Going in/out north Irvine is worst than south on the I5, and to/from La Jolla is a nightmare.

Even if he have to take the 405 it ain?t that bad because it is only for a short distant, unless there is an accident. The 73 is not going to be much faster than I5. Sometime it is easier to cut across Culver or University/Jeffery to the I5, and do not take the Jamboree/261 to I5 at rush hour because I make that mistake a few times when I was down there for 3 months.

PS. I just got a job offer there yesterday and I'm not leaving Victoria BC, because it is much nicer here. (Commute to/fro any where in Victoria is 15 min or less, beautiful environment and the people is much nicer).

I'm telling you, if you leave after 6 you won't hit really bad traffic...not in SD at least.
