trading my dell for an ibook?

well i don't know if i should put this in general hardware or not but i need some advice.

apparently my friend is really interested in getting a PC laptop for programming, and he is offering me his ibook (700mhz i think), 12.1" screen, 20gb hard drive,CD writer and DVD and 384mb RAM + his sony 2.1 MP digital camera (don't know the model but it looks pretty cool and have memory stick)

now my Dell laptop on the other hand has a pentium 4 1.6Ghz, 20gb hard drive, 320mb DDR ram, 14.1XGA screen, 24x cdrom and that's about it... i mean it's pretty stripped up laptop with crappy graphics... should i go for this?

and by the way his ibook also has an airport card... whereas mine has a crappy linksys wireless card. gotta love wireless networks 🙂

do you have a desktop as well?... if i had a desktop and your dell... i'd go for it... otherwise i dunno... might have to think twice about it. My $.02.

i do autocad and occasionally play CS on my laptop. I do have a PC but i moved it back home. i'll most likely get the PC back next semester though.

Hell yes.

I have a 15" Powerbook and it is the best hardware purchase I have ever made. Go for it. You won't regret it.

If you have any questions about OS X or Macs in general, feel free to ask me!

I understand the ladies really go for guys with i-books. 😛 Go for it, especially with the camera.

he's not kidding either... 😀 ...most of the girls i know want an ibook... 😕

are you a graphic artist?

My excuse is that it's a serious PITA to convert mac fonts to pc compatible formats, and none of my clients can manage to embed fonts correctly in a PDF. But otherwise, why would you???

I can sure tell you why not. Overpriced. Buggy as hell.

You'd think that apple would have all their sh*t together since they seem to write half the software that runs on their computers. But no. What I've discovered after many years is that their non-existent userbase makes every problem I experience unique. It takes months to resolve technical problems, and very often obvious features are left out in favor of superfluous features that Jobs can tout at the next mac-expo.

Next, you have that risc processor that just can't crunch numbers.

In the end, every contemporary Mac is a beta machine running a beta OS. If you're looking for anything other than a nice case, you're going to be out of luck.

isaacmacdonald,

You've got to be kidding... I've worked with PCs and Macs for over 15 years and the new Powerbooks/iBooks are among the most stable/quality notebooks ever made (especially when used with OSX 10.2+). Beta machine? Beta OS? PPBBPPPTTT!!! 😛 Stop drinking your bong water.

Do you actually own one? I'm actively working on one every single day. While Jaguar is certainly a big step up from the original release, the thing still has lots of bugs. Classic mode is also fraught with compatability errors, and it takes twice as long to start as it did in 10.1 (although it doesn't leave an ugly white square on my desktop this time). Then there's the user friendly applications written by apple (the whole iSuite) that frequently just crash for no apparent cause. If I didn't need to deal with mac fonts and my RIP wasn't mac based, I'd be all PC in a heartbeat.

To be pedantic, it could be said that the actual OS is stable, insofar as it rarely screws up enough to require a reboot. But the non-reboot bugs are frequent and very annoying.

I do own one, I'm typing on it as we speak (my PB 12 "AlBook"). It's, by far, the most stable system I've ever owned. Aside from it being a more than adequate "hand-warmer" (it gets a little too hot for my taste when it's really crunching), it's fast and stable and far more useable than the Win XP P4 `books out there.

Go to Disk Utility and repair your disk permissions. It's Unix, if those are messed up, then your system will act sluggish and/or irradic, that's just part of it. It's probably a good idea to fix those about once a month or so.

ill go for it if i have an desktop. you can use your notebook to handle word processing and get a date or stuff. But macs are just toy IMO. I used imac for imaging class in school. and I've played with my friend's ibook everyday at my summer work last summer. with os10, it sure its pretty, but im afraid that's it, ppl say u can use unix program with osx enviroment and stuff, but if your not professional it wont get you so far on that. many said once you go mac, you won't go back to PC. imo, once you go mac you hate everything. Because after you learned how to handle everything in mac (especially imaging and ps stuff), the PC version of those its just so freaking messy (and buggy). But then you try them on mac again and you have to wait foreven to render a frame, there u go THEY ARE SO ******* SLOW!!! well that's the stage im at now...

Uh, yeah... right... 😛 I get 80+FPS in UT on my Powerbook @1024x768 with all the visuals maxed out. For a notebook that's just SO slow.

Again, my advice to you is the same as it was for the other guy... PLEASE, please, stop drinking your bong water!
