Best store ever- those kalamata olives have me addicted, and their edamame is a staple of mine. I wish they were priced a little more mainstream, though.

We have a couple of cool grocery stores around here, but the cool ones aren't chains. :p

What is Trader Joes? I've seen it quite a few times but never bothered going in. What sets it apart from other grocery stores?

Primarily a store based on healthy foods. Organic foods and the like. Slightly more expensive but the quality in general is much better.

Whole Foods is the same premise. We're pretty much direct competitors so I try to give the Trader Joe fans a hard time every now and then :D

Low prices for comparable items.

High quality . . . their don't have anything "old" . . .

They tend to sell to the "whole food" and "organic" conscious consumers . . . they are much (much) cheaper than the "natural" stores.

And no "Whole Foods" chain in So.Cal (AFAIK) . . . :p
(I guess Jimbos and Henrys are the "competitors" in San Diego - their emphasis is on fresh veggies and Jimbos has a nice organic restaurant - if pricey.)

Trader Joe's is a slightly more, uh, "eccentric" than Whole Foods. I like both stores, though.

How do you mean eccentric?

The only thing that I will have to concede is that Trader Joe's Specialty deparment (wine/cheese) selection is much broader than Whole Foods. We have a lot, but they have even more than us!

The Trader Joes by us just can't compete with the grocery items or produce we stock. Most people shop at both establishments if they're in the area and just find the best price on stuff. Best of both worlds :)

I've worked at Trader Joes unless you live on the east or west coast NEVER NEVER EVER buy the produce because they have to ship it from Cali. to the east coast then to the mid west. By the time we get it the produce only had a week or 2 left before its experiation!!!!

btw dont work for them their training program is sh|t IE: I was 16 when I was working there and the guy training me talked for a good 45 minutes about the wine department and just skimmed over the rest of the store. I was like wtf who the hell would ask me about the wine department? And the rest of their job training is they will correct you after you fvck something up because they didn't tell you how to do something.

By "eccentric" I mean the names and packaging of some of their in-house products is sometimes weirder than Whole Foods', not that the selection is greater.
I often buy stuff like beer and snacks at Trader Joe's. They've had some wacky beers over the years, including "Fat Weasel Ale" which was at least 8% alcohol (IIRC, it's discontinued). Finishing a six-pack would put you ass-over-teakettle. :p

You have to love when they stock specialty beers like that :D It's a nice change of pace compared to the usual stuff you find.

Agreed. I get 20% off and can't afford to eat lunch there everyday when I work, let alone shop there. Then again, I don't have a whole lot of disposable income.

The more people that shop there, the more the prices go down :)

This place owns me. I remember when I was a kid I'd ride on the back of my dad's bike there and get those popsicles with the real fruit chunks in them. Now I get their Sushi, Jalepeno stuffed olives, and wines. They have a really good '84 port too. :)
